Trek Toubkal

Day 1 Marrakech:   Early evening meet with your guide to share essential trip information, and so that your passport and insurance details can be collected.

Note: we leave early tomorrow for the start of our adventure, so you may want arrive a day earlier (or stay a day later) so that you can explore this unique city. After the meeting, perhaps head to the city’s main square – Djemaa El-Fna – for dinner.

Day 2 Imlil and Neltner Refuge:   After breakfast we leave Marrakech and drive south, with the high peaks of the Atlas Mountains ahead of us. We will follow the picturesque Mizan Valley as far as the small settlement of Imlil where we meet our trekking crew. From here we start trekking along a trail which follows the river and climbs gradually to the holy shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (2310m). Surrounded by rocky peaks this huge white-painted boulder marks the spot where, legend has it, a holy man lies entombed. Beyond here it's a steady climb to reach the Neltner Refuge (3207m). Operated by the Club Alpin Francais the refuge was completed in 2000 and designed to resemble a fortified Berber dwelling. The refuge is fondly referred to as Toubkal basecamp and is a great place to share stories and meet other international trekkers and groups. After settling into our dorms there will be time to watch the sunset before dinner and a briefing.

Trek time - 6-7 hours.

Day 3 Hike to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4167m):   Today is the day we ascend Mount Toubkal (4167m), North Africa's highest peak. After an early breakfast we leave the refuge and set off on a trail which zig-zags up above the hut. Initially we walk on rocky trails and pass boulders before we head up between two magnificent peaks. As we continue upwards the views become more impressive and as we reach a ridge-line which drops off to the east we know we are getting close. Finally we arrive at 4167m and stand on the top of the highest peak in North Africa. There will be time to take plenty of photos with the distinctive metal tripod which officially marks the summit and we'll be surrounded by breath-taking views. Around us are the incredible peaks of the High Atlas, whilst away to the north-east we'll see the Anti-Atlas. In the distance to the south are the Jebel Sirwa and the magnificent Sahara Desert. After taking in the views and making sure we don't forget the all-important summit photos, we'll descend back via the refuge to Imlil where we will stay for the night.

Trek time - 10-11 hours.

Day 4 Marrakech:   This morning we return to Marrakech. We can take you to the airport or to a riad or hotel if you would like to extend your stay. You may also like to take a trip to the coast or spend a night in the Sahara desert, which we can arrange for you, just let us know.

Accommodation is in simple shared accommodation  (apart from the first night which is in a hotel). All meals are included once on the trek.
